Qala, a film about the turbulent relationship between an aspiring singer and her controlling mother, is set in 1940s Calcutta. Qala Manjushree, who recently won the "Golden Vinyl," makes her entrance in the film. Several journalists are speaking with her and bringing up her brother. Qala responds inconsolably that she doesn't have a sibling. Her mother (Urmila), who was carrying twins, gives birth to Qala in a flashback, but her sibling does not make it. Urmila tries to suffocate Qala. Qala is taught the craft of music by Urmila, who also cautions her against becoming a courtesan. Qala is plagued by images of her brother accusing her of stealing what is rightfully his in the present. Qala is told to relax by a doctor. Another flashback shows Qala learning how to perform music.
