The story takes place in Madurai's Subramaniapuram neighbourhood. After spent 28 years in prison, a criminal is freed in 2008 and stabbed immediately outside the prison gates. The authorities are perplexed by this because the offender had never spoken to anyone in the prison and had refused to meet anyone who came to see him from outside throughout his stay in prison. They are astounded that someone who harboured a hatred against him for 28 years would knife him when he stepped outside prison.
The picture then shifts to 1980, where Azhagar (Jai), Paraman (M. Sasikumar), Kaasi (Ganja Karuppu), Dopa, and Dumka, a polio-stricken physically challenged person, are among a group of unemployed close friends. They are successful.
